Genetic Counselling

Genetic Counseling and Second Medical Opinion

The best medical team at your service

Clinical genetics deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and management of genetic disorders. Its objective is to help people or families with a disease or suspected of presenting it, to achieve a diagnosis that allows the correct management of the pathology and a correct follow-up of the patient.

Genetic counseling is the process by which patients or relatives at risk of suffering a hereditary disease are counseled on the consequences of said disease, the probability of developing or transmitting it, and the way in which it can be prevented, avoided or improved.

Genetic counseling is important in situations such as:

Family planning
Genetic counseling before pregnancy provides important information about the risk of presenting a child with a genetic disease or the medical approach needed in cases of repeat abortions or infertility.

During pregnancy
In case of suspecting the presence of a syndrome or ultrasound abnormality in the fetus, the genetic counseling consultation is useful to determine what tests are necessary and their interpretation. If the pregnancy is normal, the genetic counselor can provide information about the suitability of non-invasive prenatal testing.

People with a family medical history
People with a family history can answer their questions during the consultation and find out if there is an appropriate genetic test for their case.

People proactive in their health care
There are many diseases that have a hereditary component and have prevention strategies. The genetic counselor can help you identify possible risks based on your genetics and personal and family history to establish an action plan.

People diagnosed with a genetic syndrome
People with this type of syndromes can request a consultation to answer questions, find out the heritability or prognosis of their disease and determine possible preventive treatments or treatments that reduce symptoms.

People with symptoms and clinical signs with suspected genetic origin without diagnosis
In these cases, the counseling consultation is essential, together with all the medical reports available from the patient, so that the geneticist can assess each case and, if necessary, prescribe the most appropriate genetic test.

Genetic testing is an important tool in the service of the genetic counselor, but it is not always necessary. In the counseling consultation, the geneticist assesses each clinical case, determining if there are diagnostic tests that can provide relevant information.

Genetic counseling provides key information not only in the interpretation of diagnostic tests, but it is important for making informed clinical decisions. The genetic counselor also facilitates the understanding of the extent of the pathology, recurrence, heritability, management, and prevention options.

When we are talking about genetic diseases, requesting a second medical opinion is a common practice and helps patients feel more confident about their diagnosis and medical management options.

Frequently asked questions about Genetic Counselling services

What is genetic counseling?

It is a medical specialty in which a health professional expert in genetics provides information and assistance to families with a genetic disease or at risk of presenting it. Genetic counselors also play a critical role in conveying information about genetic disorders to other medical professionals, to patients, and to people in general.

Does Veritas Intercontinental also offer Genetic Counseling or Counseling?

Yes, indeed, our doctors are renowned experts in the field of genomic medicine. We offer Genetic Counseling before and after the completion of all our tests. During the prior consultation we assess the personal and family history and determine which test is the most appropriate for each case, explaining its scope and resolving any doubts. In the subsequent consultation, the results are reviewed with the patient and an action plan is developed. We also give support to medical specialists in case they need it.
